MCHG 2021 Webinar 3 – Theory of Action Underpinning People’s Power: The Case of the People’s Health Movement

Civil society plays a vital role in bringing about progressive public health change. The extent to which it can be effective as a change agent depends on the relationships between civil society and the state.

In this presentation held by the Australian National University on Thursday, 18 November 2021 at 12:30 PM AEDT, Professor Baum will use insights from an action research project of the ways in which members of the global People’s Health Movement define the theories of change behind their movement. She will also examine the extent to which PHM members are able to exert their agencies and the structural power constraints on them doing so.

Fran Baum is an NHMRC Leadership Fellow and Matthew Flinders Distinguished Professor of Public Health and Foundation Director of the Southgate Institute for Health, Society and Equity at Flinders University. She received an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for her public health services. She is a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences and of the Australian Health Promotion Association. She is a past National President and Life Member of the Public Health Association of Australia. She is co-Chair of the People’s Health Movement Global Steering Council.
