MCHG 2021 Webinar 4 – Bureaucratic Power: City Planning Minus the Politics

In this webinar held by the Menzies Centre for Health Governance, RegNet, Power and the People’s Health series of the Australian National University (ANU) on Thursday, 25 November 2021 at 12:30 PM AEDT, the speaker , Patrick Harris will discuss how bureaucratic power has played out in the urban planning sector in Australia and what this means for the people’s health and health equity. Using examples from his research into urban planning in Sydney, Patrick will focus on the practice of ‘post-political’ urban planning.

As the name suggests, post political planning removes politics from input into decisions about cities and urban infrastructures. The power of bureaucratic and technical expertise excludes less powerful but more politically diverse experiences with urban places and spaces. Patrick will offer evidence based and theory informed insights into making bureaucracies great again.

Dr.Patrick Harris is deputy director at the Centre for Health Equity Training Research at Evaluation (CHETRE). He is co-located at UNSW and South Western Sydney Local Health District, where he represents CHETRE on the population health directorate. His research focuses on ‘healthy’ public policy, specifically cities, urban and regional planning and infrastructure. He is the president of the NSW Branch of the Public Health Association of Australia.

This event will be delivered online only via Zoom.
