Join Our Guest Lecture on ‘Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation for Sustainable Development and Community Well-being’

What are the challenges of disaster and climate risk and how can they be addressed?

Join the online guest lecture,‘Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation for Sustainable Development and Community Well-being’, delivered by Associate Professor Iftekhar Ahmed from the University of Newcastle, on Friday, 10 April 2026 from 1:45pm to 4:00pm (Jakarta time).

Drawing on his research and international experience across the Asia Pacific, A/Prof. Ahmed will discuss the critical challenges and opportunities for achieving resilience to disaster and climate risks. The lecture firstly provides an understanding of the impact of disasters in the context of development in Asia-Pacific countries such as Indonesia. It highlights the systemic factors that contribute to disaster risk and how that is leading to greater vulnerability and exposure. The lecture discusses the relationship of disasters to different international agreements, including the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, Paris Agreement and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The critical relationship with the SDGs is examined by highlighting how resilience is built into them. A global overview of the targets achieved so far by the different agreements is presented. Finally, the lecture underscores the challenges of building resilience in the Asia-Pacific, and the opportunities and strengths that can potentially address these challenges with a view towards community well-being.

Indonesian graduates and scholars of Australian tertiary institutions are especially encouraged to attend. Please RSVP via this link by Wednesday, 8 April 2026. Due to limited places, early registration is recommended. Attendees will receive an e-certificate of participation.
