Recently Returned Alumni Reconnect in Makassar at the 2026 Reintegration Workshop
Coming home after studying in Australia is an exciting milestone, but it also comes with a period of adjustment. In May, recently returned Australia Awards alumni gathered in Makassar for the 2026 Reintegration Workshop, reconnecting with peers while preparing for their next steps back in Indonesia.
The virtual and in-person workshop brought together alumni from across regions, especially from Eastern Indonesia, creating a welcoming space to reflect on their journeys, share experiences and consider how to apply what they have learned. Earlier online sessions laid the foundation, with discussions on goal-setting and navigating reverse culture shock.
The journey began with a series of virtual sessions on 6–7 May, during which alumni explored goal-setting, action planning and strategies for navigating reverse culture shock. These early conversations created space for reflection and helped participants start thinking about how to apply their experiences back home.
Building on the virtual session, the in-person workshop on 15 May opened with remarks from the Australian Consul-General in Makassar, Mr Todd Dias, who highlighted the important role alumni play in strengthening ties between Australia and Indonesia. The workshop also featured a keynote speech delivered on behalf of the Governor of South Sulawesi by Australian alumnus, Mr Andi Darmawan Bintang, Assistant II to the South Sulawesi Regional Secretary.
From there, participants joined a series of interactive sessions, including ‘Storytelling for Impact’, where they explored how to communicate their experiences in meaningful and engaging ways. Discussions on public diplomacy and networking also encouraged alumni to strengthen connections and continue contributing beyond their workplaces. Throughout the workshop, participants exchanged ideas, built new networks and reflected on how they can create a positive impact in their respective fields.
On the second day, 16 May, the workshop was held in a hybrid format, with the focus shifting to leadership development. The sessions equipped alumni with practical skills to navigate their professional environments and lead with confidence.
The workshop also featured a certificate presentation ceremony for six former Indonesian Language Learning Ambassadors (ILLA) from Eastern Indonesia. The certificates were presented directly by the Australian Consul-General in Makassar, Mr Todd Dias.
The six ILLA Ambassadors recognised during the ceremony were Adrian Christianto Katili, Agung Prawira Elang, Dyan Widya Agustina, Dian Septiawati, Kristo Pizaro Michel Arronngear, and Rahmat Naofal Nasir. The recognition highlights their contributions in promoting cross-cultural understanding through Indonesian language and cultural activities for children in Australia. Through the program, the ambassadors not only introduced Indonesian culture abroad, but also gained valuable insights into Australian culture and expanded their professional networks.
As part of the experience, participants also joined the Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia (FSAI), offering a more relaxed opportunity to connect and strengthen bonds within the alumni community.
By the end of the workshop, alumni left with clearer goals, stronger networks, and a renewed sense of purpose, ready to apply their skills and experiences while staying connected to both Indonesia and Australia.
