Examination for Strengthening Implementation of Recycling Medical Plastic Waste by Using Re-Crystallisation Approach

Project leader: Mr. Sunit Hendrana

Level of education and university: PhD, The University of Queensland

Collaborating Organisations: Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI)

Project Location: Banten

Activity Type: Research & Development and Innovation

Sector: Activity Type

Project Rationale:

According to regulation SE MENLHK 2/2020, medical waste should be burned in an incinerator. This can create other pollution, such as toxic gases and other dangerous solids that need other solutions for removal. Meanwhile, there is environmentally friendly technology available (Chemosphere, 2018, 209, 707-720) other than burning.

Therefore, LIPI has developed a method for recycling medical plastic waste by using solvent-polymer interaction patented in Indonesian patent P02020010633 (registered). The response in the community is positive, based on media coverage and comments on Instagram.

Thus, it is necessary to identify the technical and scientific aspects that need to be addressed for the implementation of this method in the community, especially to manage waste caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
