Project leader: Mr. Iwan Jazadi
Level of education and university: PhD, University of South Australia
Collaborating Organisations: INOVASI
Project Location: Nusa Tenggara Barat
Activity Type: Community development activities
Sector: Activity Type
Project Rationale:
Based on the newly released PISA report of December 3, 2019, Indonesia's reading score is ranked 72 out of 77 countries, then the math score is ranked 72 out of 78 countries, and science score is ranked 70 out of 78 countries (Liputan6.com, 2019). To respond to this situation, the government, through the Education and Culture Ministry, has many efforts including cooperation with many stakeholders such as universities, NGOs and INOVASI.
West Nusa Tenggara Province, in particular, is rated as one of the lowest in literacy ability. The Head of the NTB Library and Archives Service revealed that the level of interest in reading in this province is very low. Nationally, NTB is ranked 31 out of 34 provinces in Indonesia (SuaraNTB.com, 2019). It was revealed that in NTB, for every 100,000 inhabitants, only one person reads a book.
The low interest in reading in NTB is also influenced by the large number of illiterate people. Based on Statistic Center Board (BPS) data, according to the results of the March 2018 SUSENAS, the illiteracy rate in NTB is 12.58 percent. This project will be held in Sumbawa Regency where the literacy rate is 6.04 percent among all the regencies and cities in NTB.
During this COVID-19 pandemic, the primary school students in grades 1 to 3 are considered the most vulnerable, especially in Sumbawa Regency’s remote areas with no or minimum internet access. As these students learn from home, they may face obstacles during their early literacy education stages. This project is important to fill the gap. Also, in Sumbawa, there has been no such volunteer community that strives to teach literacy to primary school students in grades 1 to 3. Therefore, in this project the community will be created. All those who have the same concern about literacy will be encouraged and covered in this community. This community is expected to continuously run the volunteer program even after the project has ended.
