MORA Research Project : The Quest of Unlocking the key to Warung (Micro Enterprise) Business Sustainability in Indonesia through Education Quality

Project Location: This survey and research project will be conducted online by leveraging Modal Rakyat platform databases. The data sampling will be taken from the warung community across 15 provinces, with 60% located inside Java and the rest are outside Java: Jawa Timur, Jawa Barat, Kalimantan Tengah, Kalimantan Utara, Papua, Bali, Jawa Tengah, Riau, DKI Jakarta, DI Yogyakarta, Kalimantan Barat, Kalimantan Timur, Sulawesi Barat, Sulawesi Selatan, and Nusa Tenggara Timur.

Project Rationale:
MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Entrprises, which include warungs) play a critical role in the economy, as they account for 60% of Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) and 97% of the domestic workforce. To further increase economic growth, warung businesses need not only to survive, but to thrive.
The proposed project is important because the growth of MSMEs businesses are in the hands of family-owned warungs. To become thriving businesses, the children of warung owners should be equipped with knowledge that can shape their social, emotional, and critical thinking skills. The essential skills for success can only be gained through proper education.
By assessing factors that contribute to educational learning inequality, it is hoped that children from low income families can get what they need and deserve to support their families’ businesses. It is expected that access to education can help to uncover children’s hidden potential to expand their parents’ businesses in the future, be it a warung or on a bigger business scale.

- Warung owners and their children (~200) - Providing insights on how to educate their children
- University partners (2) – Transfering knowledge between developed and developing markets
- Modal Rakyat (1) - To enable us to enhance our credit scoring engine
- NGOs / Associations (5+) - To help promote better policy in the intersection of education and micro business sustainability
- Rural Schools (50+) - Provide better information on how to improve their curriculum
