Project Rationale:
The COVID-19 pandemic will affect socio-economic livelihoods in developing countries such as Indonesia, which may eventually create unfavourable conditions that may limit the purchasing power of the affected households and communities, such as those in the most vulnerable groups. Various studies estimate the economic impact of COVID-19 is expected to be large and severe in Indonesia. Compared to the baseline projection of 5 percent economic growth in 2020, COVID-19 will reduce Indonesia's economic growth to between 1 and 4 percent. The Asian Development Bank (2020) predicts that no less than 6.9 million people will become poor as a result of the pandemic.
As a response to the situation, the Indonesian government has devised several fiscal and social assistance tools focussing on strengthening the livelihoods and resilience of household and communities to the impacts of COVID-19, particularly on three sensitive sectors: micro small and medium enterprises (MSME), industry support and public health spending. This initiative is in line with and supports the proactive action of the Indonesian government to address the social and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
