Activity Type: Research & Development and innovation
Sector: Small and medium enterprise development, Economics, Natural Resource Management
Project Rationale:
In 2024, the capital city of Indonesia will be moved to the Penajam which is close to Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. Balikpapan, with a population of 852,046, is going to be the main gateway to the new capital city of Indonesia. As a result, several strategic plans are in progress to support this new capital city of Indonesia. One of strategic plans is maintaining the municipal waste facilities to support greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation. The volume of waste in Balikpapan is around 390.65 tons per day, an increase of 7.31% from 2020. The Manggar waste landfill has around 9.1 hectares of landfill cell units with a final processing capacity of 420 tons per day. The Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Manggar installed a leachate treatment facility which is integrated with the wastewater treatment plan (WWTP). It also has an anaerobic–aerobic–maturation pond system which produces biogas equipped with a biogas capture system called the Intermediate Treatment Facility (ITF). The MSW Manggar produces LFG, however it does not utilise all the potential of the LFG because about 60% is released into the air with an open vent system. From our perspective, this is not the correct action because releasing methane gas into the atmosphere will increase GHG emissions. On the other hand, methane can be converted to energy so that it can provide benefits and added value for the surrounding community.
