“Why Indonesia Matters in Our (Australian) Schools” by The Asia Education Foundation

Join this event releasing a rationale which sets a new narrative for why Australian schools should better understand and engage with Indonesia – on Thursday, 28 October 2021 at 3.30 PM AEDT / 11.30 AM WIB. As a background, Indonesia is one of Australia’s most significant and sometimes most misunderstood neighbours. Indonesian has been taught in Australian schools for nearly 70 years. But there is now a serious decline at the secondary level. Australia and Indonesia share an environment and history, and it is believed that the bilateral relations’ future has so much potential. Young people’s creativity and friendship will shape that.

Written for school leaders, educators, and those working in education policy, this rationale aims to answer the much deeper question of ‘why.’ Through research, interviews, focus groups, and a national survey, this contemporary analysis seeks to answer that challenge: Why Indonesia matters in Australian schools.

With remarks delivered by the Australia’s Ambassador to Indonesia, HE Penny Williams PSM, this online event will include a short panel discussion about the significance of the rationale with educators, and the voices of young people with direct experience of connecting Indonesia and Australia.
