At the recent “Contemporary Islam in Indonesia and Australia Seminar”, Noor Huda Ismail, Executive Director of the Institute for International Peace Building and Producer of the acclaimed documentary Jihad Selfie, gave a presentation that attempts to answer the question of why some people gravitate toward radicalism. Ismail argued that prestige and masculinity play significant roles in the recent growth of religion-based movements, which in itself is nuanced, complex, and sometimes amusing.
