Project Objective :

To train local teachers on waste management and utilisation of sustainable practices in domestic waste recycling

Project Description:

The proposed “Sangkabira” Waste Management Project (SWM) is named for the traditional Sasak Tribe's word for “helping each other”. There is an urgent need for knowledge and skill development in managing either domestic or crop waste in this area, and to eliminate the negative habits of littering and chemical fertiliser use by producing compost and promoting organic farming gradually. This program will delivery a set of training courses and workshops that focus on various dimensions of waste management systems to meet the proposed targets. This includes: post-harvesting waste management training, domestic waste management training, recycling and waste sorting operation workshop and training.

  • A four-day in-service post-harvesting and domestic waste management training course for 20 farmers from 10 families (husbands and wives) in Sembalun Village, East Lombok, to strengthen their understanding about how to manage their post-harvesting waste (i.e. coffee, crop) in order to minimise adverse risk to the surrounding environment. Moreover, to deepen their understanding about how to recycle domestic waste, both organic and plastic waste, by using sustainable practices.
  • A three-day in-service plastic waste management and recycling training course for 20 teachers from 10 schools in Sembalun, Sembalun Bumbung, and Sembalun Lawang Villages, East Lombok.

Ongoing monitoring review process will be held to ensure that everyone is implementing the programs according to the planned milestones. Furthermore, the monitoring review process will be supervised by two of our team members to ensure the objectivity and reliability on the process. Their role is salient in this process, not only to supervise, but also to encourage each person in this program.

Project Beneficiaries:

  • 20 farmers (husband and wife couples)
  • 300-600 school-aged children (chosen to be the agents of change in this project)
  • 20 educators from 10 different schools in Sembalun Lawang, Sembalun Bumbung.

Priority Development Area:

Human development for a productive and healthy society

Relevant Facts:

According to East Lombok Statistic Bureau, 45.65% of their population work as farmers. Most of them are still practicing traditional monoculture farming methods that use chemical fertilisers to boost their production. Their practices result in a relatively large quantity of post-harvesting waste. The absence of landfill and waste management facilities in Sembalun sub-districts have left many people in Sembalun with no proper means to manage their domestic and post-harvest waste. Their only option is to either dump it into the river, or improperly incinerate it in the open air.
