Join Our Lecture on Revisiting the 'Culture-Bound Syndrome' Status of Eating Disorders

Have you ever questioned the notion that eating disorders might be confined to certain regions of the world? Well, now's your chance to explore this intriguing topic further. On Friday, 20 October 2023, between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Jakarta time, we invite you to join us for an online lecture that will challenge preconceived notions and broaden our perspective on this intricate issue.

Our distinguished speakers, Isabel Krug, Jade Portingale, and An Dang from the University of Melbourne, will guide you on this intellectual journey as they present their lecture titled "Revisiting the 'Culture-Bound Syndrome' Status of Eating Disorders".

At first, eating disorders (EDs) like Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), Binge Eating Disorders (BED), and Otherwise Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED) were primarily associated with North America and Europe. However, the landscape of EDs has undergone significant transformations. This includes shifts in global prevalence rates, evolving concepts about these disorders, and changing ideals regarding body image—especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. These developments underscore the severity of EDs in non-Western regions.

During this lecture, our speakers will challenge the idea that EDs are culture-bound. They will explore recent global prevalence rates, diagnostic criteria, root causes, and innovative treatment approaches, all through a transcultural lens.

We warmly invite all graduates and scholars of Australian tertiary institutions from Indonesia to join us in this endeavour. Let's collectively enhance our comprehension of eating disorders, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries. Please secure your spot by RSVPing before Wednesday, 18 October, using this link. A participation e-certificate will be provided.
