Are you keen to explore how urban planning can enhance cities' resilience to climate change? Join us for an enlightening online lecture, "Improving Cities Climate Change Adaptation: International Lessons", by Dr Francesca Perugia from Curtin University. This insightful session will be held via Zoom on Friday, 19 July 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Jakarta time).
Urban planning and policies are crucial instruments for promoting adaptation. They guide decisions on future space use and infrastructure management, reducing the likelihood and impact of disasters on the built environment. Unlike mitigation measures, the positive effects of adaptation policies are immediate, and their costs are often marginal compared to other management or development expenses.
From a policy standpoint, climate change responses are framed as a global effort with individual responsibilities, meaning national and local actions are taken to meet international commitments. This lecture will discuss the international policy framework guiding national and local responses. It will define adaptation, explain its components, and explore how climate change responses align with disaster risk management and sustainable development.
The second part of the lecture will present adaptation case studies from around the world, demonstrating that effective adaptation strategies, regardless of context, are linked to four fundamental actions: (i) long-term and structured support for resilience building, (ii) improved governance and stakeholder collaboration, particularly community-driven processes, (iii) community-based risk management, and (iv) nature-based and integrated approaches to mitigation.
Calling all graduates and scholars of Australian tertiary institutions from Indonesia interested in understanding innovative approaches to climate change adaptation! RSVP by Wednesday, 17 July, to secure your place in this online lecture. Register now at this link. As a token of appreciation for your participation, attendees will receive an e-certificate.
