Roles of Non-Timber Forest Products commodity to local community during pandemic COVID-19 at three local areas across West Papua province

Project Rationale:
Non-timber forest products play an important role for the local community, especially the indigenous community in West Papua. These commodities supply daily needs such as staple foods, energy, medicine, informal jobs and extra incomes. However, these facts are almost neglected by the official governments and other formal and informal institutions responsible for empowering the local community. The problem is that these commodities are very diverse, each location has different characteristics and the local community is selling in raw material without any added contribution of these commodities for the main staple foods, other important nutrients (protein, lipid and other minerals). Cash income, bartering of commodities and so on are not yet understood or reported on here in West Papua province. The natural abundance of these commodities has recently been decreasing and there is no action or programs for cultivation or plantation. This is crucial for local ethnic people for self-sufficiency and independence during the COVID-19 pandemic here in West Papua province.
