Implementation of MIMO Technology for Distance Learnining in 3T Regions

Project leader: Mrs. Apriana Toding

Level of education and university: PhD, Curtin University

Collaborating Organisations: -

Project Location: Sulawesi Selatan

Activity Type: Knowledge and technology transfer

Sector: Education and training

Project Rationale:

The COVID-19 pandemic currently has a significant impact on every aspect of society, especially on the education sector in Indonesia. UNESCO reports that nearly 300 million students worldwide have had their school activities distressed and even threaten their education rights in the future. Distance learning methods have been widely used as an alternative method in responding to emergency situations.

However, distance learning is not the best choice for all schools in Indonesia, especially those in 3T regions. Limited internet facilities makes it difficult for teachers and students to carry out this learning application. Moreover, the low mastery of technology, ownership and accessibility to it are also major issues. Both the teaching staff and the students, especially in the 3T regions, experience this situation, as they are not very accustomed to using technology in everyday life. A solution is needed so that the teaching-learning process, especially in the 3T regions, can still run well. In addition, many schools are also not ready to implement this method due to these limitations. This is very unfortunate considering the schools are experiencing acceleration to enter the era of digitalization, whether they realize it or not.

Indirectly, the era of school digitization will have an impact on the shifting role of teachers. Teachers play the role not only as a source of information and knowledge but also as a connector and a director for their students to the right cyber-based learning resources. Teachers become one of the keys to the success of school digitization. One of the skills teachers must have is the knowledge and proficiency to use digital media, communication tools, or networks in finding, evaluating, using, creating information, and utilizing it in a healthy, wise, intelligent, thorough, accurate, and law-abiding way in order to guide communication and interaction in daily life.

One of the innovative methods that can be implemented to expand the reach of education is through the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Relay.  MIMO refers to cooperative communication technologies uses relay modes. MIMO Relay can improve the system reliability and expand the reach of communication system. Through the implementation of MIMO Relay technology system as the Internet of Things (IoT) innovation in the distance learning,  the learning process can run without being limited by distance including in 3T regions (frontier, outermost and least developed) in Indonesia.
