Facts & History From Earlier Project Implementation:
1. Batik Industry:
- The fashion industry is moving towards a sustainable fashion. Indonesian batik is recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Heritage of Humanity and is a huge contributor to the Indonesian creative eonomy. In Indonesia, batik from the fashion industry has contributed AUD $71,400,000 to export value until October 2017. In East Java, the batik industry contributed AUD $1,895,231 to export value in the year 2016.
- Previous methods of producing batik used natural wax and natural dyeing, but for the past 20 years most are using chemical artificial colours, with liquid waste contaminating rivers.
2. Pasuruan, East Java
- There is a small artisan batik community in Pasuruan. This community is having difficulty in accessing to commercial networkss, and introducing Pasuruan Regency batik nationally and globally.
- The regional government (Regent of Pasuruan/Bupati) has tried to provide various channels to the artisans through the National Craft Council of Pasuruan Regency, however many of the batik designs are still not in accordance with national and global standards and unable to compete with other regencies.
Project Beneficiaries:
100 participants who are batik artisans from Pasuruan Regency. 10 of it will be selected for each batik motif design.
