Commercialising "SENAMIAN" Herbal Drink (Jamu): Helping a Poor Rural Community in Lombok Develop a Sustainable Business Based on Local Resources

Project leader: Mrs Baiq Yufia Elsadewi Yanuartati

Level of education and university: Master, The University of Queensland

Collaborating Organisations: the Centre of Research and Community Development (LPPM) Universitas Mataram

Project Location: Nusa Tenggara Barat

Activity Type: Community development activities

Sector: -

Project Rationale:

Setiling Village, Central Lombok District is a remote area located at the foot of Mount Rinjani in NTB Province. This village is still an underdeveloped and poor village, which is predominantly made up of vulnerable community groups including women, children, and youth. The women become housewives and not many can help the family to bring in income. Many youths in this village drop out of school and find it difficult to get a decent job due to limited job opportunities in the village. Some of them emigrate abroad, working to be able to change their economic standard. Some of them live in the village and work as labourers in the agricultural sector with small incomes, and some are unemployed. However, they have a youth group called Karang Taruna that focuses on social work. Setiling Village has abundant natural resources, especially herbal medicinal plants. However, people do not know how to process these materials into products that have economic value and can increase their income.

A student group for community service from the University of Mataram has developed a local product in Setiling Village, which is herbal drink (jamu) made from the local ingredients. It was labeled as “SENAMIAN” jamu. The innovation aspect introduced to the village community is the processing of local natural resources and the use of more marketable packaging. However, this student group has not been able to further develop this empowerment program due to the students’ limited time and labour. The community has already welcomed this activity. The process of making herbal medicine can empower many community groups, including women, as producers, entrepreneurs as the managers of the businesses, and youth groups in helping with marketing. However, they do not yet have enough knowledge about quality control, certification, expanding marketing reach, and more importantly the management of the business, which will threaten the sustainability of their jamu business. Given the importance of sustainability from this community empowerment activity, an initiative that focuses on business development is urgently needed, which this project will focus on.

Project Beneficiaries:

25 poor people living in a remote village called Setiling will benefit in this project. They are mostly women and youth (15 women and 14 young people), and the entrepreneur group leader (1 person). This project can be scaled up in the village and even scaled out to other villages once the branding of the SENAMIAN jamu successful.

Priority Development Area:

Economic Recovery
