Supporting Women-led Micro and Small Enterprises (WMSEs) to Online Commerce in Three ‘Kampung Cyber’ in Bandung Regency

Project leader: Mr Luthfi Ramadani

Level of education and university: PhD, The University of Melbourne

Collaborating Organisations: BUMDes Desa Citeureup, Pemerintahan Desa (PEMDES) Sukapura, and Pemerintahan Desa (PEMDES) Lengkong

Project Location: Jawa Barat

Activity Type: Capacity building, mentoring or coaching

Sector: -

Project Rationale:

Women-led Micro and Small Enterprises (WMSEs) account for over 50.6% of Indonesian MSEs [1]. The giant wave of online commerce in Indonesia recently, especially on e-commerce platforms and social commerce, allows WMSEs to run their business from home, providing greater exposure and wider access to resources. However, WMSEs in Indonesian rural village areas face barriers to entry due to a lack of knowledge, skills, and qualified employees to operate online commerce [2].

We see the potential of local WMSEs in Bandung Regency to present and grow their business with assistance to enter and thrive in online commerce. Specifically, our project focuses on three rural villages, namely Citeureup, Sukapura, and Lengkong, which have been declared as ‘Kampung Cyber’ from Bandung but have not embraced the benefits of digital development in the local economy. We believe that supporting WMSEs to leverage the economic potential of their local products realises Indonesian objectives to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals in decent work and economic growth, gender equality, and reduced urban-rural inequality.
