Project leader: Ms Attin Syahnurotin

Level of education and university: Non Degree, Charles Darwin University

Collaborating Organisations: Koperasi Unit Daerah Gemah Ripah, Sukabumi, Jawa Barat

Project Location: Jawa Barat

Activity Type: Training, workshop or seminar

Sector: -

Project Rationale:

Smallholder dairy farmers in Sukabumi Regency, West Java, run dairy farming activities in small-scale dairy farms with only 2-3 cows on average, living on a low income of approximately IDR 500,000 – 2,500,000 per month (AUD $48-$240). They face serious problems with manure management. The limited land available for planting forage as well as the narrow space for barns means manure is only stored in heaps in their backyards on the farm. This becomes an issue for the health of the cows, and the farmers' families. In addition, it creates social problems as neighbours complain and farmers are blamed for bad waste management. Moreover, these conditions are a barrier for farmers to improve farm production through expanding the cow population, since more manure and environmental problems would result. In fact, farmers want to improve manure management, however, they face two barriers. Firstly, the knowledge and skills to process manure. Secondly, the manure market and management strategy. This project will address those barriers, turning manure problems into profitability, by assisting farmers to be able to process manure into various products suited to the market.
