Collaborating Organisations: -

Project Location: Bali

Activity Type: Organisational or institutional strengthening

Sector: -

Project Rationale:

In Bali, students with physical disability have faced a double disadvantage as they face additional challenges and barriers limiting their opportunities to access education and fulfill their rights to be part of the community. An additional cultural barrier in Bali, is the belief that disability is a curse and a disgraceful condition. This causes people with disabilities to not be fully involved in social life.

YPK Bali is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to support people with physical disabilities to reach their potential by providing a quality rehabilitation and education services. However, YPK Bali faces challenges when integrating people with disabilities into the local community. The mindset of the local community is to see people with disabilities as people who do not have ability and cannot be relied on. They are considered not to understand how to act like members of the community, especially in carrying out their various roles in the Balinese cultural environment. The options for this large section of the community are being greatly hindered by long held cultural beliefs.

Unfortunately, this situation leads people with disabilities to face even worse challenges. They lose the opportunity to be integrated into the Balinese society which is rich in traditional and cultural values in their daily life. They look increasingly incompetent, causing lack of self-esteem and undeveloped self-potential. This situation then strengthens the mindset that people with physical disability are not capable of making progress in their education or making improvements in their life as human beings reaching their fullest potential.
