Initial Research on Promoting Women's Participation in Social Forestry in Garut Regency, West Java Province, Indonesia

Project Rationale:
The Indonesian Institute (TII) is interested in undertaking research for approximately six months to promote awareness of the importance of women’s participation in managing social forestry. TII will work with a local organisation, Almisbat, which has been supervising several farmer groups in Garut District, West Java Province, Indonesia. Studies show that women’s participation, particularly in decision making and their representation in organisation of social forestry, is low. In addition, based on the experiences of one social forestry group in Indonesia, named Trigona in Sigi District, Central Sulawesi, women’s participation in the sector has contributed to additional income for the households. Thus, increasing women’s economic participation in social forestry also has a positive contribution directly and indirectly in tackling poverty. Another example comes from Kubu Raya District, West Kalimantan, which shows that increasing women’s participation in the green economy, which also includes forestry, has decreased the number of underdeveloped villages and increased the number of empowered (capable) villages in the district. Our research will be used to undertake advocacy programs and promote inclusion and women’s empowerment in the organisation of social forestry in Garut District.
We will use the findings of this research as part of policy recommendations to the government, specifically to the Ministry of Forestry and Environment, and related ministries, such as the Ministry of National Development Planning, the Ministry of Village and Underdeveloped Regions, the Ministry of Cooperatives and SMEs, and the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection. TII and Almisbat consider the importance of social forestry to improve people’s welfare in the area by self-organising, being inclusive, and having collaboration with various actors. In this case, our research will be used as a baseline to undertake advocacy programs by our local partner in the study area and hand-in-hand, we are going to promote inclusion and women’s empowerment in the organisation of social forestry in Garut District. This will contribute to research on women’s participation in social forestry, economic empowerment, and poverty alleviation, particularly in the Indonesian context, and in this case, in the proposed study area of Garut District, West Java.

Direct beneficiaries are two farmer groups with a total membership of 302 farmers in Garut District, West Java.
