Wana Ternak: Empowering Young People in Forest Area Through Livestock Innovation

Project Rationale:
Based on data from the Ministry of Forestry in 2006 there were approximately 48.8 million people or 12% of Indonesia’s 219.9 million people living in and near forests. Of these 48.8 million people,10.2 million people or 25% were classified as in the ‘poor’ category. The project will be developed in Blora, Central Java. According to Badan Pusat Statistik (2020), the Blora regency has a 195,582,074 hectare area, of which 49.66% is forest. Data showed that 60% of people living near the forest depend on low agriculture practices and are in the poor category, with an average of owned land less than 0.5 hectares per family. 56% of soil in Blora was gromosol which has low productivity. One of the villages is located near a forest area is Setren village. This village is populated by a low-income population, unemployed young people, with low motivation. The soil is dry and difficult to cultivate unless for corn and tree species. Most people are working as corn farmers on rented land and depend on the rainy season because it's difficult to get water for irrigation. People in the forest area have no income during the dry season after cultivation is abandoned. The livestock owned by farmers is not highly managed so the income from livestock is not significant. Therefore there is a need to develop a farmer group with knowledge of management and integrated sheep production, to provide unemployed young people with new work, increase the village income, and motivate other young people to work.
