Renewable energy for Education Sustainability in the remote Sabaru island of Pangkajene regency

Project leader: Kusno Kamil

Level of education and university: Master, Curtin University

Collaborating Organisations: SMA Negeri 15 Pangkajene Kepulauan

Project Location: Sabaru island, the second island of the Sabalana islands, Liukang Tanggayya district.

Activity Type: Capacity building, mentoring or coaching

Sector: Education and Training, Education Management, Human Resource Development

Project Rationale:

Education is a basic right of every citizen, including students of SMA Negeri 15 Pangkep. The school is located on the island of Sabaru, within the Sabalana atol islands, which is administratively part of the Liukang Tanggayya district, one of 115 islands in the Pangkajene regency, South Sulawesi.

Located about 200km from the regency capital, the 10.5 km2 island has a population of 750 people, and can be reached by traditional motorised boat in about 25 – 30 hours from Pangkep city. This high school has 180 students, 98% of whom come from families of the Family Hope Program (PKH). This group of poor people consists mostly of traditional fishermen with a monthly income of less than US$75 per month and is entitled to government subsidies every month.

SMA Negeri 15 Pangkep is led by a principal whose status is a public servant, supported by 13 other non-permanent teachers. Only half of these teachers live on Sabaru island. The teachers are arranged in rotation to serve small study groups (Rombel) consisting of the total 180 students. 81 students live on three other neighbouring islands within the Sabalana islands. When it is time for the national exams, conducted online simultaneously throughout Indonesia, the students must be fully mobilised to the regency capital so that they can be temporarily enrolled in schools that have internet connection. Such inter-island learning conditions are highly dependent on the presence of teachers and are vulnerable to natural disturbances such as rain, storms, and sea waves which can disrupt the learning schedule at any time. Currently, distance learning models that use communication technology and digital materials cannot be implemented, due to the limited electricity and communication networks on this island.

Project Beneficiaries:

This project should benefit at least 180 students and 13 teachers of SMA 15 Pangkep/ Pangkajene with an advanced digital-distance learning method implementation; and overall 700 people living on the island with the electricity powered by renewable energy sources.
